The Magnanimous Marcus

Nothing in 2020 should really be surprising us within the political world: we’ve had Donald Trump hiring a former WWE man as a financial adviser, Dominic Cummings going on a leisurely drive to Durham to test his eyesight in the midst of a lockdown, and some of the largest anti-racism protests the world has ever seen. Therefore, to be frank, a footballer having more impact on government policy than the Prime Minister is almost comparatively dull news, but what it’s done to draw attention to the callous and underhanded operating nature of this heartless government has been huge.
The governments currently operational policy during this pandemic has been clear: keep people distracted with the onslaught of deaths they could’ve prevented while quietly and calculatedly slipping some of the most brutal policies this country has seen in all these years of austerity through the commons. They really are utter wankers aren’t they?
Under the unforgiving tory axe this time were free meals for the most disadvantaged children in the country, at a time when unemployment continues to sky rocket during this deadly pandemic. Clearly, the Tories seem to think that the best way to get people back to work at a time of no jobs is to starve their children, which seems par for the course for any solid Conservative.
Worryingly, with a majority the size of theirs, there is nothing any political opposition can do to effectively stop these policies becoming law and so it has become incumbent on us all in the public to sit up, pay attention, and fight them to the hills to stop them.
One such figure that understands this is Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford, who stepped up to the plate and fiercely fought the government on their policy of starvation, and won. This makes one thing abundantly clear: it’s all well and good having a great big majority in parliament, but it means nothing if we the people can stop you operating and challenge you every single step of the way. After all, the Tories will do anything to stay in power and you don’t win power when you’re at 20% in the polls.
If we are to continue effectively challenging and stopping this rotten government from enacting anymore of their murderous policies then it is clear what we must do: rally as an opposition (something it seems Kier Starmer is still learning how to do) and blow up and absolute shit storm in the face of the government, as Marcus Rashford has already proved to be possible.
Nothing particularly profound in this piece, just a healthy dose of common sense and common decency that I know we all possess; or at least some of us still i hope.
